Call for papers

The 2nd Descriptive Grammars and Typology conference will take place in Paris, December 1-3, 2021.

We welcome submissions concentrating on the issues and challenges that face the authors of descriptive grammars, the expectations of grammar users, as well as wider discussion of the role of typology in grammar-writing. The presentations may take either a language-specific or a cross-linguistic perspective. This second edition of the conference will be more specifically focused on the theory and practice of grammar writing and will exclude papers concerned with the description of grammatical structures. However, any topic relevant for grammaticography (e.g. issues with field data) may be of high interest for this conference.

Topics relevant to the conference may include (but are not restricted to) the following issues:

  • The challenges of describing a language in its own terms and, at the same time, making it comparable to other languages
  • The roles of form and function in conceptualizing and organizing language descriptions
  • Challenges of and approaches to describing rare structures
  • The role of semantics in grammar writing
  • The role of corpora in grammar writing
  • Approaches to variation in language description
  • The relation of language and linguistic structure to language ecologies
  • Challenges and solutions for meeting the diverse needs of typologists, language learners and native speakers when writing a descriptive grammar

INSTRUCTIONS FOR ABSTRACT SUBMISSIONS

The conference will consist of one unique general session of oral presentations. Anonymous abtracts should be no longer than one page A4 (normal margins of 2,5 cm on each side, single spaced lines, Times New Roman, Doulos SIL or DejaVu font, 12 pt font size), with the possibility of using an additional page for examples and references, and should be written in English. Participants may not be involved in more than two abstracts, of which at most one may be single-authored.

All abstracts should be submitted as an MS Word or Open Office Writer file via the conference website. To be able to do so, you first need to create an account on the Sciencesconf.org platform by choosing the “Create account” option from the dropdown menu that appears when you click on the arrow to the right of the “Login” button (under the website banner). If you already have a Sciencesconf account, just login via the conference website. Once connected, select "Submissions" in the MY SPACE menu, then "submit an abstract".

The file name of your abstract should be the first two words of the title of your abstract separated by a hyphen.

Time for oral presentations will be 30 minutes, including 10 minutes for discussion.
